The Blessing of Jesus Birth

I watched as a Jewish father picked up his week old infant child and held him in his arms.  He began to speak a blessing over this child.  He said this at the beginning of his prayer, baruch ata Adonai Eloheinu, Melech HaOlam and then again at the end of his prayer.  I asked him later what that meant.

He said it means, “Blessed art thou Lord God, King of the Universe”. I was intrigued by this ritual my friend spoke regularly over his children.  I wanted to know more about what this phrase really means to him personally… so I asked him.

He said, “All blessings come from God.  I know He is the very essence and source of all goodness in this life.  I am stating that He is the giver of blessings to me, my family, and all the world.  He invites us into being a participant in living a life of blessing others.  I acknowledge that reality every time I pick up my child, hold him in my arms, and speak the blessing God is to us.”

It states in Psalm 68:19, “Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden. The God who is our salvation.”

When Jesus came to this earth, he came to bless us by taking the burdens he wanted to carry for us.  He understands our weakness, our vulnerability, our temptations and struggles.  He lived it too! He desires to be the greatest blessing in your life… and that will overflow to others who need it as well.

It is my prayer that as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus that you will experience a greater filling of our Emmanuel… God with us!

Grateful to share in this celebration with you,
Pastor John
