Is There Enough?
Mark 8:14-21
14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,” they replied.
20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
They answered, “Seven.”
21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

Study Notes
‘When we try to pick out anything by itself we find it hitched to everything in the universe.’ -John Muir (Nature Writings, 245).
I love this quote from John Muir, we have it hanging in our boys room and just recently our oldest (Levi Muir Rinker) was able to read it for himself! When I study the Bible the idea that things are ‘hitched to’ one another proves fruitful. Certainly seeing how the Bible is a story that is hitched to our own story is helpful, but notice too, how the Bible relates to itself. Below are some bread crumbs through the Bible, passages where bread is key to its message. Some of these passages are mentioned in the sermon, some are not. My challenge for further study is to read a few (or all) of these passages and write down in a word or phrase what it means to you and remember it throughout the week, let God’s words to you rewire your thinking this week.
peace.
